The Case

The four-piece stainless steel case is fully brushed save for polished accents on the bezel and lugs. Fitted with a sapphire crystal featuring anti-reflective coating, it has a screwed-down triple gasket crown. The watch is water-resistant to 10 ATM. The case is 43mm in diameter, has a thickness of 13mm and measures 22mm between the lugs.

The Case Back & Movement

The circular brushed case back is engraved with a limited edition number between '01 to 25'. It also features a handmade 18k rose gold medallion showing Ernest Hemingway's boat, Pilar. Incidentally, this latter name was not only the name of the heroine in For Whom the Bell Tolls, but was also the nickname of his then-wife, Pauline. The modified 11 ½ ligne calibre VB - 24A automatic movement features 26 jewels, perlage and blued screws. Other highlights include a Glucydur balance, an Anachron balance spring and a Nivaflex 1 mainspring. The balance has a frequency of 28,800 bph and features a 38-hour power reserve and a skeletonised, decorated rotor. The movement is suspended in a ring of mu-metal which helps protect it from excessive magnetic forces.

The Dial & Hands

A double curved, sunray brushed ocean blue dial, featuring white indexes and hour indications coated with Super-LumiNova ® BGW9. Steel coloured hands treated with Super-LumiNova ® BGW9.

Night Fishing

The watch's Super Luminous Nova properties on the dial's well-defined indexes and hands, which are all easily visible and legible, even during low-light conditions. This feature ensures that the watch can be used effectively in all lighting situations, from the illuminated brightness of day to the subdued glow of night.

The Strap & Buckle

A 22.00 mm hand dyed deep ocean blue crushed leather strap with off white stitching to match the dark blue dial and a custom-made 20.00 mm all brushed with polished highlights stainless steel Van Brauge buckle.

Presentation Box

The watch is supplied in a beautiful, handmade British Racing Green box, featuring an outer sleeve. The box contains a customised spring bar tool, a luxury polishing cloth, hangtag, Van Brauge brochure, owner's medallion, a spare strap and the warranty booklet. In addition, the watch is supplied with a signed copy of 'Writer, Sailor, Soldier, Spy: Ernest Hemingway's Secret Adventures, 1935 - 1961' by Nicholas Reynolds.

My Inspiration

‘…no man was ever alone on the sea.’

It is impossible not to think of Hemingway without imagining his life in Key West, Florida where he was as passionate about fishing as he was about writing.

As always, Hemingway did not do things by halves. During the Second World War, he filled his 38ft fishing boat, Pilar, with submachine guns, bazookas and hand grenades with the intention of attacking any Nazi U-boats that might lurk in the Caribbean waters.
